About Golden Retrievers

The Golden Retriever is a large and friendly breed that was originally developed in Scotland in the late 19th century for retrieving game. This breed is well-known for its friendly and affectionate personality, making it a popular choice for families and as a companion dog. Golden Retrievers are also highly intelligent and trainable, making them well-suited for a variety of roles, including search and rescue, as therapy dogs, and as assistance dogs for people with disabilities.

The Golden Retriever is a medium to large-sized breed, with males typically weighing between 55-75 pounds (25-34 kg) and females weighing between 50-65 pounds (23-29 kg). They have a dense, water-resistant coat that is typically golden in color, which helps to protect them from the elements when retrieving game. This breed is also known for their athletic ability and enjoy physical activity, making them well-suited for a variety of activities, such as hiking, swimming, and agility trials. The Golden Retriever is recognized by several registries, including the American Kennel Club, the United Kennel Club, and the Canadian Kennel Club.

Golden Retriever Health & Genetics

Golden Retrievers are generally healthy and long-lived dogs, but like all breeds, they are prone to certain health issues. Some of the most common health concerns in this breed include hip dysplasia, a genetic condition that affects the hips and can lead to arthritis, and elbow dysplasia, a genetic condition that affects the elbow joint. Other health issues that have been reported in the breed include ear infections, due to their floppy ears and their tendency to get wet and dirty, and skin allergies, which can cause itching and skin irritation.

Golden Retrievers are also prone to certain genetic conditions that can affect their health, such as progressive retinal atrophy, a condition that affects the retina and can lead to blindness, and subvalvular aortic stenosis, a heart condition that can cause difficulty breathing and an increased risk of sudden death. To reduce the risk of these conditions being passed on to their offspring, it is important for breeders to perform health screenings on their dogs and to only breed dogs that are free of these conditions. It is also important for all Golden Retriever owners to work with their veterinarian to ensure their dog receives regular check-ups, vaccinations, and any necessary medical treatment to keep them healthy and happy.
