About Australian Shepherds
The Australian Shepherd was developed in the western United States, primarily in the state of California. The breed's origins are somewhat shrouded in mystery but it is believed that it was developed from a mixture of Spanish, Basque, and British herding dogs that were brought to the United States by Spanish settlers and Basque sheepherders. The breed was originally used for herding livestock on ranches in the western United States, and was known for its intelligence, agility, and versatility, making it an indispensable asset for farmers and ranchers.
Today, the Australian Shepherd is recognized by several major dog registries, including the American Kennel Club (AKC), the United Kennel Club (UKC), and the Australian Shepherd Club of America (ASCA). The AKC recognizes the breed in its Herding Group, while the UKC recognizes it in its Companion and Performance Group. The ASCA is the breed's parent club and is dedicated to preserving the breed's working heritage and promoting responsible breeding practices. With its history of working on the ranch and its friendly disposition, the Australian Shepherd is a popular choice for many dog owners and enthusiasts, and is well-regarded by many major dog registries around the world.
Aussie Health & Genetics
The Aussie is a relatively healthy breed with a lifespan that averages between 12 to 15 years. However, like all breeds, they can be prone to certain genetic health issues. Some of the most common health concerns in the breed include hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and allergies. Hip dysplasia is a congenital condition where the hip joint doesn't develop properly, which can lead to arthritis and hip pain. PRA is an inherited condition that leads to progressive vision loss and eventual blindness. Allergies can cause skin irritation and itching, and can be triggered by various environmental factors such as pollen, dust mites, and certain foods.
To minimize the risk of genetic health issues, it is important to purchase a puppy from a reputable breeder who performs health screenings on their dogs. Health screenings and proper pedigree analysis can help identify potential health problems before they occur and allow breeders to make informed decisions about which dogs to use for breeding. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and the Canine Eye Registry Foundation (CERF) are two organizations that perform health screenings and issue certifications for dogs. By purchasing an Australian Shepherd from a breeder who performs these screenings, you can increase your chances of getting a healthy, happy dog that will be a beloved member of your family for years to come.
