About Australian Shepherds

The breed's origins are somewhat shrouded in mystery but it is believed that it was developed from a mixture of Spanish, Basque, and British herding dogs that were brought to the United States by Spanish settlers and Basque sheepherders. Today, the Australian Shepherd is recognized by several major dog registries, including the American Kennel Club (AKC), the United Kennel Club (UKC), and the Australian Shepherd Club of America (ASCA). The AKC recognizes the breed in its Herding Group, while the UKC recognizes it in its Companion and Performance Group. The ASCA is the breed's parent club and is dedicated to preserving the breed's working heritage and promoting responsible breeding practices.
