(NOTE: Lassie l "Pal" is here listed because he was the first collie that Rudd Weatherwax trained for the job as "Lassie" in the 1943 film, "Lassie Come Home". Even though LASSIE l (also known as "Pal") was THE INSPIRATION; he was not the sire of Lassie ll.
Lassie l "Pal" (Pal von Glamis) came from Marjorie "Cherrie" Osborne-Cohen's Glamis (pronounced "Glamz") kennels in North Hollywood, California; while Lassie ll "Lassie Jr." came from Ted Kattell's BORCO kennels at Vasquez Rocks high in the foothills of Chatsworth, California. The kennel name BORCO is derived from the Binghamton Oil Refining COmpany which was owned by the Kattell family.
"Pal" starred with Roddy McDowall in the 1943 silver screen movie "Lassie Come Home"; then went on to portray "Bill" the collie accompanying young Elizabeth Taylor in the silver screen movie "Courage Of Lassie". "Pal" then went on to star in five additional silver-screen movies.
In 1954, after starring with young Tommy Rettig in the first two television pilots of "Lassie"; due to advanced age, "Pal" was replaced by three year old BORCO Kennel rough collie named Lassie ll ("Lassie Jr"); and, the title of the television series was changed to "JEFF'S COLLIE".)
Lassie ll starred with Tommy Rettig as "Jeff Miller" in the "JEFF'S COLLIE" TV series shows, along with Jan Clayton as "Ellen Miller" and George Cleveland as "Gramps". 'And; of course..."Lassie".
The "JEFF'S COLLIE" series ran from 1954 through 1959.
Lassie ll ("Lassie Jr.") is THE FOUNTAINHEAD (Generation l) of the Weatherwax AKC (American Kennel Club) registered line of LASSIE collies.
Lassie ll also starred with young Jon Provost who was cast as "Timmy Martin" to continue the "LASSIE" tv series after changes were made in the cast of human characters. Lassie ll (Lassie Jr.) retired early and was replaced by "Spook" until Lassie lll ("Baby") could take over the role as LASSIE, with succeeding Weatherwax linebred father/son descendants playing the role thereafter.
